The Redwood City Police Department has named the four policemen involved in an encounter with a domestic violence suspect who died as a result of the incident.
Officers Oscar Poveda, Matthew Cydzik, Brian Simmons and Daniel Di Bona have been placed on administrative leave, as per protocol, while the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the death.
The incident took place around 7:30 p.m., when Redwood City Police intervened at a house on the 500 block of Lanyard Drive. A neighbor said Ramsey Saad, 55, of Redwood City, assaulted his 83-year-old mother and threatened to kill her outside the residence, police said. Neighbors’ attempts to physically restrain Saad failed and he attacked the first officer who tried to rescue his mother.
“Additional police arrived at the scene and tried to arrest the suspect, but he continued to resist violently,” police said. “During the fight, the suspect lost consciousness. “
Officers and paramedics began taking action to save Saad, then transported him to hospital, where he later died, police said.
According to protocol, the incident is currently under investigation by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
